Police ID body found in burning DC building

UPDATE 11:10 p.m. 11/03/2014: The D.C. police have identified the woman as Latroia Renee Smith, 26, of Northwest. They say she had suffered gunshot wounds as well as burns.

EARLIER: WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia police have discovered a woman’s body in a vacant building that was burning.

Police spokesman Paul Metcalf says firefighters were called to the site on Langston Place in southeast Washington just before 5 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters found the unidentified woman inside the building.

Police say the homicide branch is investigating, but the cause of the death is undetermined. Police initially said the death was being investigated as a homicide. The woman’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. No other details were released.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
