Tour de Cure to close D.C.-area roads Saturday

WASHINGTON — A D.C. biking event will close parts of the George Washington Memorial Parkway and D.C.-area roads Saturday.

There are more than 850 participants in the Tour de Cure bicycle race that is set to take place on Saturday beginning around 7 a.m.

The event’s 13-, 33- and 50-mile courses will cause closures and traffic delays at the following locations on the George Washington Parkway from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to National Park Service.

  • Arlington Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle Arlington National Cemetery is accessible from Rt. 110 Northbound and the G.W. Parkway Southbound. All traffic at the top of the ramp to Memorial Avenue will be forced to turn left towards the Cemetery and Rt. 110 Southbound.
  • Clara Barton Parkway (Chain Bridge Intersection to Ramp to MacArthur Blvd. near the “Glen Echo Turnaround”) east/southbound traffic will be turned around onto the west/northbound Clara Barton Parkway. Drivers headed toward the city can get off at the next exit to MacArthur Blvd. and use the Clara Barton Access Bridge-Cabin John Bridge combination.

Metropolitan Police Department released the route, which will be closed from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

  • Start: 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Proceed Eastbound on Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Turn Right onto 9th Street to the 9th St Tunnel to ramp for Maine Avenue
  • Bear Right towards 395 exit/Richmond
  • At top of ramp, bear Right towards Maine Avenue
  • Take sharp Left onto Ohio Drive (against traffic)
  • Slight left to continue onto Ohio Drive (against traffic)
  • Proceed around Haines Point and West to Erickson Circle
  • Cross Independence to North onto 23rd Street (against traffic)
  • Bear Left onto Memorial Bridge (against traffic)
  • Clockwise around Memorial Circle-back across Memorial Bridge (against traffic)
  • Bear left onto Parkway Drive (past volleyball courts)
  • Right at the courts onto Ohio Drive
  • Bear sharp Left – counter flow Potomac River Freeway
  • Proceed up the right ramp and bear left onto Whitehurst Freeway
  • Continue to end of Whitehurst (against traffic) to M Street
  • U-Turn at M Street returning back onto Whitehurst
  • Return counter flow on Whitehurst (against traffic)
  • Bear left onto ramp to Potomac River Freeway (prior to K Street exit)
  • Continue counter flow onto Ohio Drive to sharp left onto Ramp: VA,

Memorial Bridge Arlington Cemetery Ramp

  • Continue on ramp to Lincoln Memorial Circle
  • Continue counter flow to 23rd Street (against traffic)
  • Bear left onto 23rd Street (counter flow) to Independence Avenue
  • Left onto Independence Avenue to 15th Street
  • Turn Left on to 15th Street
  • Turn right onto Madison Drive
  • Turn left onto 14th Street
  • Turn right onto Constitution Avenue
  • Turn Left onto 10th to Pennsylvania Avenue
  • Left onto Pennsylvania to Finish at 12th on Pennsylvania Avenue

Police note that during the race, the 9th Street Tunnel will be closed to all traffic, and the 12th Street Tunnel will be closed to all traffic.

Event organizers warn drivers that the two longer rides phase to “rules of the road” once they reach MacArthur Blvd. in Glen Echo. While many of the remaining roads should be open, vehicles should expect increased bicycle traffic.
