D.C. taking steps to synchronize traffic signals

WASHINGTON — It makes drivers furious. One red light after another with no green in sight. Now, the District Department of Transportation is taking action to adjust all of the District’s 1,600 traffic signals.

On Friday, the department began to tweak 200 intersections near Nationals Park and the Anacostia River, including Pennsylvania Avenue, East Capitol Street, and Benning Road.

The traffic lights will be studied and synchronized throughout March.

According to the department, it will take more than two years to study and re-time all of the District’s lights, but the entire network should be revamped by the end of 2016.

DDOT says the improvements will make it safer for pedestrians, improve traffic flow, and cut down on vehicle emissions.
