A D.C. nonprofit is reeling from the alleged theft by an administrative assistant of $5.1 million since 2005, the Washington Post reports. One twist: that administrative assistant for the Association of American Medical Colleges has donated wedding gowns to military brides and won a lot of publicity for her business in the process.
According to federal court records, Ephonia Green, 44, allegedly had $1.4 million in 74 checks made out to her Upper Marlboro bridal shop, Couture Miss Bridal & Formal.
The charges against Green are contained in an eight-page “criminal information,” which can be filed in a felony case only with a defendant’s cooperation.
The Post reports that it means a plea agreement may be in the offing. It’s also thought to be one of the largest alleged embezzlements from an area nonprofit.
