WASHINGTON — Virginia may be known as “the birthplace of a nation” and produced eight United States presidents, but the state is drawing scorn from a member of D.C. Council.
Virginia is a state “not known for any particular enlightenment,” sneered veteran Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham.
The Democrat is objecting to a measure that would create a separate driver’s license for people living in the U.S. illegally. The proposed cards would include the words “not for federal official purposes.”
Graham worries people with those licenses could run into problems if they encounter police in Virginia or even Maryland.
“Our residents don’t just stay in the District of Columbia,” he says.
“They travel frequently into the suburbs, they travel frequently into Virginia, a state that is not known for any particular enlightenment, although [on Election Day] they might do the right thing.”
