Services available for Navy Yard victims, families

WASHINGTON – Throughout the next few days, the FBI has counselors at Bolling Air Force Base providing services and support to the immediate families of the dead and severely injured from the Navy Yard shooting.

For Navy Yard employees and those who live nearby, the Mayor’s Assistance Center is open at King Greenleaf Recreation Center at 201 N Street SW. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

Melissa Hook, director of the D.C’s Office of Victim Services says “workers and the community are eligible for services and crime victim’s compensation.”

She adds that the center “will help connect people to financial reimbursement for lost workdays or mental healthcare”

And many of those who worked in building 197 — the location of the shootings — had to leave their phones, purses and laptops there Monday. Hook says “we’re hoping to provide support to escort people as they go back into the building, because certainly it will be very traumatizing for a lot of them.”
