Drive-in movies come to Northeast

WASHINGTON – Union Market, the artisan food market in Northeast D.C., begins hosting a summer “DC Drive- in” movie series on Friday nights, starting July 12.

A different movie will be shown each Friday night for four weeks on the market’s three-story-tall white wall. And admission will be free.

Union Market customers reacted to the news of the summer drive-in. Andrew Church, who lives by Nationals Stadium, calls the series “exciting.” He loves the idea of the roller skating car hops who will take your order and bring your food to your car: “Now you’re talking.”

The films will be D.C.-centric. The series opens with “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” on July 12. It continues with “The Distinguished Gentleman” July 19 and “The American President” July 26. The series finishes with “No Way Out” Aug. 2.

Reservations for parking spaces are already booked solid, but organizers say that cars waiting in line on 6th Street will be guided to any unfilled spaces beginning at 8 p.m.

If you don’t have a car, that’s no problem. A picnic area has been set up for walkers and bicyclists on a first-come, first-served basis. The movies start at 9 p.m., but you’re encouraged to get there early, since music, contests and giveaways will precede the films.
