Komen cancels 2014 3-Day in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON – Susan G. Komen’s 3-Day will not return to Washington, D.C. in 2014, the organization announced.

The organization announced “the 3-Day will not be returning to the following markets in 2014: Arizona, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.,” on Facebook Monday.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Komen officials cited “economic uncertainty over the past four years” as the reason for canceling next year’s races in some areas.

The organization notes:

While the 3-Day has brought great awareness to the breast cancer cause, participation levels over the last four years have made it difficult to sustain an event of this magnitude in 14 cities.

In 2012, the Associated Press reported participation in Komen races had dropped since the announcement that Komen had decided to stop making grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer-screening.

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which also benefits breast cancer research, is still on. That event will take place in early May.
