Metro to extend service if Caps games end late during playoffs

WASHINGTON – During the playoffs, Caps fans can Rock the Red right up to the buzzer without having to worry about whether they can take the subway home.

An agreement with Metro will keep trains running an extra hour if playoff games go late.

The Capitals’ playoff run begins Thursday night at Verizon Center. Recent match-ups with the New York Rangers suggest an extra period – and a late night – could follow.

Verizon Center and Metro say the additional service will come in games that run later than 11 p.m. on days when Metro would normally close at midnight.

Metro’s regular service on Friday and Saturday nights already runs until 3 a.m. the following day.

In the event of extended service due to the playoffs, fans can board trains at Gallery Place, Judiciary Square (F Street entrance) and Metro Center (11th & G Street entrance).

The entrances to other stations will close at the usual time, but passengers can exit at all of them.

Metro recommends customers get to one of those three stations no later than 12:45 a.m. on nights with additional service.

Announcements at Verizon Center will let fans know whether there will be late-night service.
