WASHINGTON – Welcome to another swampy summer weekend. Escape the heat by cheering on Olympians at viewing parties throughout the region, or head to a county fair complete with live entertainment and plenty of food.
Whip out your red, white and blue for the H Street Olympic Bar Crawl, which kicks off at Argonaut at 5:30 p.m. Stops include the Pug, Star and Shamrock and Queen Vic. At Fuzion Fridays, D.C. native and professional basketball player David Hawkins hosts a viewing party at Bar 7. Enjoy happy hour specials and stick around for DJ Alizay after the opening ceremony.
There will also be events at Sign of the Whale on M Street, Blue Banana in Petworth, Union Jack’s in Arlington and Capitol City Brewing Company. The Washington Post has a complete list of viewing parties in the area. Click here to see them all.
Redskins fans can watch their favorite team practice Friday and Saturday starting at 2:55 p.m. Make sure to get there early as parking lots open at noon and gates at 1 p.m. Practices last between 90 minutes to 2 hours. Loudon County takes its fairs very seriously. This weekend, the fairgrounds will be bustling with a watermelon eating contest, cupcake baking contest, magic show and a karaoke contest. Daily passes are $10 for adults and $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Kids under 6 and active military personnel with valid ID get in free. Check the website for a full list of events.
The Tony Award-winning director of “Angels in America” brings his Broadway hit “The Normal Heart” to Southwest D.C.’s Arena Stage Friday through Sunday. The play follows a circle of friends as they struggle to understand a mysterious disease ravaging New York’s gay community. The production is in conjunction with the International AIDS Conference, which concludes Friday in D.C. Check the website for ticket information.
