WASHINGTON – Howard Brooks, a campaign consultant to D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, has been charged with making a false statement to federal investigators.
Officials say he allegedly lied about contributing funds to a mayoral candidate widely thought to be Sulaimon Brown, according to charging documents.
The document says Brooks told FBI agents in April 2011 that he never gave any cash, money orders or other payments to the campaign of Sulaimon Brown. The document says Brooks did in fact make such payments.
Brooks has been cooperating with federal investigators. His attorney, Glenn Ivey, could not immediately be reached for comment.
The charge follows a guilty plea from Gray campaign aide Thomas Gore, who admitted Tuesday in U.S. District Court that he converted cash contributions to Gray’s 2010 campaign into money orders that were given to Brown.
The payments were intended to keep Brown in the race so that he could continue making negative comments about then-mayor Adrian Fenty as he sought reelection.
Brooks faces five years in prison if convicted.
