WASHINGTON – Police arrested a man in Northeast on Thursday after they say he robbed a bank and threatened with explosives.

Around 12:15 p.m., police say a suspect entered the TD Bank on the 1200 block of First Street, just south of New York Avenue, and handed a cashier a note demanding money. He had a suspicious package which he said contained a cell phone operated explosive.

The cashier complied and the man left the bank, leaving the bag behind. Police were in the area and arrested the suspect promptly. The investigation continues and police have not said whether they believe the man acted alone.

Technicians inspected the bag and determined it was not a threat. No one in the area was in danger at any time.

First Street was shut down for several hours as authorities worked the scene. The area reopened shortly after 3 p.m.
