WASHINGTON — Some new research from AAA indicates that people are driving slower on 70 percent of the roads they monitored. The study comes as two city councilmembers talk about imposing a citywide 15 MPH limit.
The auto club says road engineering like speed bumps, combined with speed cameras, tougher police enforcement and education, have helped to slow down motorists.
Among the spots where speeds have dropped are key commuter routes including the Anacostia Freeway, Memorial Bridge, Canal Road and 16th Street. Speed cameras are not installed in any of these locations.
D.C. gave out more than a half million speed camera tickets in 2010.
