UNDATED - Cold weather can be tough on your skin. Beauty experts at SELF Magazine have tips to help keep your skin from drying out.

Beauty Editor Eleanor Langston says with lip balms, stay away from minty balms with menthol. They dry.

The most common culprit of dry, flaky lips is licking.

"Saliva is very acidic. The purpose of saliva is to start the digestion process and dissolve your food, so when you leave even a little saliva on your lips that really causes them to dry out," Langston says.

Fragrance-free lip balms might be less likely to irritate your lips.

Other Self Magazine recommendations for best hydration in:

  • Lip Balms: jojoba oil, shea butter.
  • Bath washes: petrolatum (petroleum Jelly).
  • In creams and lotions: Hyaluronic acid or lactic acid regulate hydration in the skin's outer layer.

Another tip: Don't dry yourself completely getting out of the shower. Adding lotion to damp skin locks in moisture.

If you only have one humidifier in the house, keep it in the bedroom. Your cells "charge" as you sleep, she says.
