There's good news on the job hunting front for up-and-coming college graduates. The U.S. unemployment rate has plummeted to 6.3 percent, the lowest in 5 1/2 years, and the economy has gained 288,000 jobs.
The Virginia Employment Commission says the state's jobless rate fell slightly to 5.4 percent in November.
Layoffs in construction, the wholesale trade and manufacturing pushed Galax's jobless rate to the highest in Virginia in July and knocking off Martinsville, which has long had the state's highest unemployment rate.
New statistics from the Labor Department show the nation's capital gained 2,900 jobs in March.
