One Saturday morning event took place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in West Potomac Park in Southeast, D.C. About 150 volunteers honored Dr. King through their service.
People visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial are seeing the granite statue without the disputed words that were etched in it for the last King holiday.
Tens of thousands are expected to take part in upcoming events on the National Mall to commemorate the March on Washington and the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
"There would not be a brother in public housing on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue right now without the death and blood of Martin Luther King Jr.," Georgetown professor and author Michael Eric Dyson told the cheering and applauding crowd gathered at the memorial. "No Obama without King."
