HEBRON, Md. (AP) — Officials say a 241-year-old church in Hebron has been destroyed by fire.
Deputy State Fire Marshals say the fire at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was reported by a passer-by about 11:10 a.m. Tuesday. Officials say nearly 100 firefighters from Maryland and Delaware battled the three-alarm blaze.
The Rev. Bryan Glancey, a priest at another Episcopal church, tells WBOC-TV that he saw black smoke through the windows and flames through the roof.
No injuries were reported.
The Rev. Ronald Knapp, St. Paul’s pastor, tells The Daily Times of Salisbury that the building that burned has been in place since 1773. Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office says the church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Damage is estimated at $500,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
