June 28: Federal Spending

Federal spending has fueled Northern Virginia's economy for the last decade. But according to Stephen Fuller, an economist at George Mason University, Northern Virginia will not be able to depend on increased federal spending for economic growth in the years to come. It will have to try and spur job creation in other ways. The Connection Newspapers says federal spending, including money allocated to private government contractors, accounted for 34.9 percent of the Washington area economy this past year.
