Fairfax Co. app shows visitors what to do while in town

WASHINGTON — With the holiday season in tow, many people may be looking for new activities to entertain their guests — and Fairfax County would like to help them.

The county has created an app that will help locals and visitors find places of interest such as restaurants, bars, tours and shopping.

The Visit Fairfax app was initially launched last year for the iPhone, and a version is also available for android smart phones. Users get real-time information and promotional incentives direct to their phones.

What’s more, businesses in the county can get information about what tourists and locals are looking for.

Local apps are not unique to Fairfax County. Neighborhoods across the country are developing similar applications with information about activities and parties in their towns. In fact, just 36 hours after Ottawa launched its marketing and tourism app, it shot up the rankings becoming the 8th most downloaded social networking application in Canada.
