Obama to welcome South Korea's Park to White House

Monday - 4/15/2013, 9:08pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye (goon-hay), will meet with President Barack Obama on May 7 at the White House.

Notice of the meeting comes amid heightened tensions with North Korea's communist regime.

In a statement Monday, White House press secretary Jay Carney noted that the U.S. and South Korea are observing the 60th anniversary of their alliance. Carney said both leaders would discuss the North Korean threat and efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

North Korea recently has been issuing regular threats against the U.S. and South Korea, though a test firing of a missile that had been expected by North Korea on Monday had not occurred by late in the day.

Park was elected in December and took office Feb. 25. She's South Korea's first female president.
