BALTIMORE (AP) -- The University of Maryland Medical Center's trauma center is celebrating a gift that transformed the lives of six people and made possible the most extensive full-face transplant yet.
The fundraising gala on Saturday pays tribute to 21-year-old Joshua Aversano. The White Hall man died last year after he was hit by a van and his donated organs and tissue went to six patients.
The event also honors 90 members of medical teams who worked to save Aversano and later performed transplant surgeries.
Aversano's family still misses him, but they say they are grateful that his legacy continues through the people he was able to save.
One recipient, John Jenkins of Essex, says every day he wakes up and thanks God and the young man who gave him his heart.
