38th Annual Capital Pride Parade

The floats of the 38th Annual Capital Pride Parade hit the District's streets on Saturday, June 8.
Flags from many nations were proudly waved by a group from the Peace Corps.
Organizers estimated there were more than 170 floats and a half-dozen bands. The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps Marching Band came from New York City. Many groups tossed beads and other trinkets. At one point, the air was filled with yellow condom packages. The mood was most merry or "Gay" as one observer put it.
The streets were lined along P Street from 22nd to Dupont Circle north of 14th Street. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray told WTOP that it was the largest turn out for the Capital Pride Parade that he could remember.
The 38th Capital Pride Parade is the second event since the end of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in the U.S. Military, which allowed gay, lesbian, and bisexual people to serve in the armed forces as long as they did not reveal their sexual orientation.
Spectators snap photos of these Capital Pride Parade participants decked out in vibrant gowns.
