POTSDAM, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities have charged two northern New York men with assaulting a college lacrosse player from Maryland in a beating that left him hospitalized with severe facial injuries.
Officials tell the Watertown Daily Times (http://bit.ly/175nK95 ) that 21-year-old Donald Whelley of Catonsville, Md., was found unconscious on the ground early on the morning of Aug. 24 in the St. Lawrence County village of Potsdam.
His father says the beating left the sophomore defenseman on the Clarkson University lacrosse team with injuries so severe they required facial reconstructive surgery.
Police have charged 20-year-old Bryan Bicknell of Parishville and 18-year-old Dakota Vallance of Winthrop with felony assault. They were released under probation supervision.
It couldn't be determined if they had lawyers.
Clarkson, located near the Canadian border, plays Division III lacrosse.
