Security tightened for Preakness

WASHINGTON – Expect tighter security if you are headed to the Preakness in Baltimore Saturday.

More than 121,000 people flocked to Pimilco last year, and if the last 10 years are any indication, at least 100,000 are expected.

This year’s 138th Preakness comes on the heels of the Boston Marathon bombing. With that as a backdrop, no one is taking any chances with security.

In the days following the bombing, officials at the Maryland Jockey Club consulted more than 50 law enforcement personnel. Those consulted included representatives of Homeland Security, FBI, Joint Task Forces, Maryland State Police and the Baltimore City police.

Aside from the security changes listed below, for the first time ever, security will be roaming the ground with metal detectors. Also expect a stepped up police presence.

Here’s what’s banned from the Pimlico building:

  • Duffel bags
  • Laser lights or pointers
  • Cameras with lenses more than 6 inches in length
  • Cameras with detachable lenses
  • Coolers (unless cooler is clear see-through plastic container 18-by-18 inches)

Below is a list of the new items now banned from the Pimlico infield:

  • Backpacks
  • Duffle bags
  • No laser lights or pointers
  • Cameras with detachable lenses
  • Cameras with lenses more than 6 inches in length
  • Coolers (unless cooler is clear see-through plastic container 28-by-15 inches wide and 17 inches in height)

Beach bags are allowed in.
