Tuesday - 9/25/2012, 11:07am  ET

BALTIMORE - The acting commissioner of the Baltimore city police department is taking medical leave and will be out indefinitely.

Police spokesman Anthony Gugilelmi (goo-lee-EHL-mee) tells The Baltimore Sun ( that Anthony Barksdale has a medical ailment that will require him to be off.

Barksdale's leave comes as Anthony W. Batts, former police chief of Long Beach and Oakland in California, arrives in Baltimore to take over as police commissioner. Watts is scheduled to begin work Thursday.

Barksdale's departure and the announced retirement of Col. Jesse Oden, who oversees criminal investigations, leave Watts without two of the agency's highest- ranking officers.

Barksdale could not be reached by the newspaper for comment.
