Md. man sentenced in hammer attack on his mother

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Cape St. Claire man has been sentenced to six years in prison for repeatedly striking his mother in the head with a hammer, fracturing her skull.
Thirty-four-year-old Robert Benscoter had pleaded guilty to attempted second- degree murder. He was sentenced on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say on March 20, Benscoter hit his 61-year-old mother several times with a hammer. She was able to escape to a neighbor's house and call police.
The Capital of Annapolis reports ( http://bit.ly/Uc1Gnx) that Benscoter apologized in court, saying he would never forgive himself. His mother did not attend the sentencing.
