WASHINGTON — Between a Redskins home game, the Army Ten-Miler and construction on Metro and I-95, this could be a rough weekend when it comes to traffic and transit.
Several I-95 closures will affect Virginia drivers this weekend.
Friday night into Saturday morning
- 9:30 p.m.: Some lanes on I-95 south near Marine Corps Base Quantico will close
- 1 a.m.: Complete closure of I-95 south from Exit 148, Russell Road, to Exit 143, Garrisonville Road (Route 610).
- 5 a.m.: All lanes reopen
Saturday night into Sunday morning
The same closures will repeat overnight Saturday.
- 9:30 p.m.: Some lanes on I-95 south near Marine Corps Base Quantico will close
- 1 a.m.: Complete closure of I-95 south from Exit 148, Russell Road, to Exit 143, Garrisonville Road (Route 610).
- 5 a.m.: All lanes reopen
In addition, the I-95/395 HOV lanes will be closed all weekend, starting at 11 p.m. Friday and reopening at 5 a.m. Monday.
In addition to the full closures, watch out for other lane closures tied to the Express Lanes project on 95 and 395 in Virginia. Roads connecting to 95 may be narrowed as well.
I-66
Drivers on I-66 will face lane closures overnight this weekend between Washington Blvd/Lee Highway and the Dulles Connector Road. Two lanes in each direction will be closed during overnight hours.
Other work on the Silver Line will block lanes on the Dulles Toll Road, Dulles Access Road, Chain Bridge Road (123) and Route 7 (Leesburg Pike).
Metro
Red Line:
Riders should expect delays throughout the weekend. Buses replace trains between Silver Spring and Fort Totten. Fort Totten will be open for normal weekend service on the Green and Yellow lines.
The last train from Glenmont to Silver Spring will leave about 30 minutes earlier than normal (2:10 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and 11:10 p.m. Sunday night) because of track work.
Green Line:
Green Line riders going to or from the Greenbelt station only may experience longer waits as every other train will terminate at College Park.
Army Ten-Miler
Metro opens at 5 a.m. Sunday to accommodate runners headed to the race. Metro suggests using Pentagon Station on the Blue and Yellow lines to get there.
The race will close Route 110 between Rosslyn and Crystal City beginning at 5 a.m. Sunday. Arlington Police suggest using the GW Parkway instead.
In Arlington, the race will also close:
- S. Eads Street from Army Navy Drive into the Pentagon/northbound I-395. HOV lanes will be closed at 5 a.m.
- Route 27 in both directions from George Washington Memorial Parkway to I-395 will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- Access to the Pentagon north parking lot will be restricted to “Authorized Vehicles Only” from 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking for Pentagon employees and Pentagon Memorial patrons will be available in the south parking lot via Columbia Pike and S. Fern Street.
In D.C., the race will close:
- The Arlington Memorial Bridge
- Constitution Avenue between 23rd St. NW and 18th St NW
- Virginia Avenue between 18th St and Rock Creek Parkway
- Rock Creek Parkway from Virginia Avenue to Ohio Drive
- Ohio Drive to Independence Avenue
- Independence Avenue from Ohio Drive to 7th St SW
- 14th St SW from Independence Ave to the 14th Street Bridge
All of the roads should be reopened by noon.
The Arlington County Fire Department is also asking drivers to be aware that it is staging equipment at Long Branch Elementary School on Sunday.
Redskins game
The Redskins have a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Bears Sunday at FedEx Field, which should slow traffic on the Beltway. With the race in the morning and the HOV lanes closed, fans coming from the 95 corridor in Virginia should leave plenty of extra time.
Loudoun County
Expect big delays on Route 15 in Leesburg on Saturday and Sunday because of events at Morven Park. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s office warns traffic will be heavy beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday. The 75th Annual Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital Rummage Sale runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Rummagers need special tickets for the early bird hour between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s office also warns of delays Saturday in the area of Lovettsville Road, Loyalty Road, Route 9 and Route 690 because of a bicycle tour coming in from Maryland.
And the Aldie Harvest Festival may cause delays on Route 50 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Looking ahead
Overnight in Montgomery County on Sunday through Thursday, crews will be working on Georgia Avenue between the D.C. line and 16th St., and on Rockville Pike (Md 355) between the D.C. line and Bradley Blvd.
All next week, lanes will be closed during overnight hours as crews work in Prince George’s County on the Outer Loop of the Beltway between D’Arcy Road and Arena Drive, Route 50 between Cheverly and Md. 202, Md. 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) between Good Luck Road and the Beltway, and Md. 197 between the Baltimore Washington Parkway and Brockbridge Rd. Also, utility crews will be working on Md. 193 from Rhode Island Avenue to Southway.
There is similar work on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway between the Baltimore Beltway in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore County line.
Beginning Monday morning, there will be regular daytime closures of Pennsylvania Avenue (MD 4) at Woodyard Road (MD 223) in Prince George’s County. The State Highway Administration says setting steel for new bridges will close one lane in each direction on weekdays. It will also include complete closures of Woodyard Road for up to 15 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
There will be delays on the US 340 bridge connecting western Loudoun County with Maryland Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lanes will be closed as crews inspect the bridge over the Potomac.
Miscellaneous
Baltimore’s Light Rail will also be open early on Sunday for Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. The service will run extra northbound trips from the Cromwell Station beginning at 5 a.m.
Minor changes to the DASH schedule take effect Monday, with changes on the AT1, AT8 and AT10.
