CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Justin Jackson scored 17 points in North Carolina’s intrasquad scrimmage to kick off preseason practices Friday night.

The McDonald’s All-American, a 6-foot-8 forward, led all scorers according to unofficial statistics in the 20-minute scrimmage that capped the annual “Late Night With Roy” show. His layup with 52.4 seconds left lifted Blue past White 41-40, a win preserved when Marcus Paige missed a 3-pointer on the final possession.

Jackson is part of a touted three-man recruiting class for the Tar Heels, while Paige is a returning all-Atlantic Coast Conference performer for a team expected to be among the league favorites.

The Tar Heels have their first full practice Saturday morning and play their first exhibition game in three weeks. Their regular-season opener comes Nov. 14 against North Carolina Central.
