Austin Peay point guard Damarius Smith suspended

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Austin Peay point guard Damarius Smith has been suspended for the first half of the 2014-15 season over what the school is describing as a violation of athletic department policy.

Smith will miss all 14 of Austin Peay’s nonconference games, though he will be able to practice with the team during his suspension. The 6-foot-2 senior from Clarksville is scheduled to return in time for the Governors’ Ohio Valley Conference opener Jan. 8 at Jacksonville State.

Austin Peay announced the suspension Tuesday in a university release.

Smith averaged 8.0 points, 5.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game last season while starting 20 games. Junior Zavion Williams, senior Jeremy Purvis and freshman Tre’ Ivory are expected to compete for playing time at point guard in Smith’s absence.
