Freshman PG Thompson leaves Tennessee for Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia coach Tony Bennett has added another point guard to the roster.

Bennett says Darius Thompson is transferring to Virginia after playing his freshman season last year at Tennessee.

The 6-foot-5 Thompson played in all 37 games for the Volunteers, and started 10. He averaged 2.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.0 steals and 16.8 minutes and shot 38.1 percent (32 of 84) from the field and 74.2 percent (23-31) from the free-throw line.

His season high of 16 points came in a game against Wake Forest.

Thompson will be able to practice, but will have to sit out the upcoming season because of NCAA transfer rules.

His departure comes after coach Cuonzo Martin left Tennessee to take the job at California.
