Charlotte coach Major on medical leave of absence

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte men’s basketball coach Alan Major is taking a leave of absence over health issues.

It isn’t clear when Major will return to coaching.

The school wouldn’t specify the nature of the health issues Friday citing privacy concerns, but Major says in a press release “my family has a history of heart and eye issues, and I plan to have procedures done over the next couple of months to address them.”

Major has spent the last four seasons at Charlotte. The 49ers won 21 games in 2013-14, their first 20-win season since 2007-08.

Athletic director Judy Rose says “there is never an easy or good time for a coach to be away from his team, so this has been a very difficult decision for Alan.”
