KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Jabari McGhee has become the first player to sign with Tennessee since the arrival of new coach Donnie Tyndall.
Tyndall announced Friday through a university release that McGhee had signed. Tyndall said that the 6-foot-8 ½, 225-pound forward's "toughness and competitive edge will allow him to contribute early in his career."
McGhee is from Albany, Georgia, but he most recently played at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. McGhee, who has four years of eligibility, averaged close to 24 points and 15 rebounds per game for Hargrave this past season.
McGhee's signing boosts a recruiting class that had been decimated since California hired away former Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin. All four recruits who signed with Tennessee in November were granted releases from their letters of intent after the coaching change.
