"The policy of the United States is clear. The Senkaku islands are administered by Japan. And we oppose any unilateral attempts to undermine Japan's administration of these islands." -- President Barack Obama in a written response to questions published in Japan's Yomiuri newspaper before his arrival in Tokyo at the start of a four-country Asia tour. The Senkaku islands are at the center of a territorial dispute between Japan and China.

"The next phase, I think, is that we step up with potentially a more powerful, more capable side-scan sonar to do deeper water." -- Australian Defense Minister David Johnston on the search efforts to find the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370.

"To take away the rights of minorities is a shocking decision. With this, and the voting rights decision last year, it's clear the Supreme Court is undoing the rights gained by blacks and Latino people in the 1960s and 1970s." -- George Washington, a Detroit lawyer who challenged Michigan's ban on using race as a factor in college admissions. The Supreme Court upheld the ban in a ruling issued Tuesday.
