WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Marcus Thornton scored 25 points and William & Mary withstood a UNC Wilmington rally for a 92-86 victory Wednesday night.
The Tribe (10-14, 4-9 Colonial Athletic Association), which led 51-35 at halftime, extended its lead to 68-46 early in the second half. But UNC Wilmington (9-16, 4-9) rallied behind Keith Rendleman, who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
He got help from Chris Dixon (19 points), Craig Ponder (16) and Tanner Milson (13), each going 3 for 6 on 3-pointers. But Thornton, too, had scoring help from Brandon Britt (22 points), Tim Rusthoven (13) and Kyle Gaillard (10). William & Mary, however, only led 81-75 with 2:26 left.
When Dixon made a layup and a trey, it trimmed the Tribe's lead to 83-80 with 1:40 left. But Thornton hit a drive, then 7 of 8 free throws in the last 0:46 to clinch it.
