Virginia backup PG Brogdon to redshirt this season

Wednesday - 11/28/2012, 11:51am  ET

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia's backup point guard Malcolm Brogdon will redshirt this season.

Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett says Brogdon has been slow to recover from foot surgery performed March 7. Bennett says holding the sophomore out this season will allow his foot to fully recover.

Brogdon, from Norcross, Ga., played in 28 games as a freshman before injuring his foot. He averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds and shot 39.6 percent from the field.

He had some of his best games against top competition, scoring a career-high 16 points in a victory against No. 14 Michigan. His best scoring performance in an Atlantic Coast Conference game was 14 points in a victory against Maryland.

The Cavaliers (4-2) play at Wisconsin on Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge
