BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California kickoff returner Trevor Davis was taken to the hospital after being removed from the field on a stretcher when he was injured on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter Saturday against UCLA.
Davis stayed down on the turf for a long time after appearing to take a knee to the helmet as he was tackled. While the trainers were tending to him, Davis’ teammates showed concern as they kneeled on the field and the crowd chanted “Tre-vor Da-vis! Tre-vor Da-vis!”
Davis was able to move his legs and was seen talking. He gave a thumb’s up to the crowd as he was taken away on a cart and brought to the hospital.
“He said he felt OK,” coach Sonny Dykes said. “He’s going to the hospital but certainly signs from the field all looked good.”
After the delay for the injury, Cal tried to drive for the winning score but Jared Goff threw an interception in the final minute of a 36-34 loss.
“That was kind of scary to see,” Goff said. “It was tough having to go out there and try to put a drive together.”
UCLA coach Jim Mora began his news conference by sending good wishes to Davis.
“You just hate to see anybody go down,” Mora said. “When you have to bring the cart out it just brings everything into perspective. These are kids playing a game that they love. Hopefully that young man is OK. UCLA is thinking about him.”
