Alabama A&M explodes past MVSU 42-20

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) — Octayvius Miles opened the second half with a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, capping a 28-point scoring spree that helped lift Alabama A&M to a 42-20 victory over Mississippi Valley on Saturday.

Mississippi Valley (1-4, 0-3 SWAC) went up 6-0 in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs (2-3, 1-1) responded with four-straight touchdowns, capped by Miles’ kickoff return to start the second half.

Julian Stafford made back-to-back touchdown receptions for the Delta Devils — 66 and 68 yards –closing the deficit to 35-20 with 10:57 left to play. Nelson Hale’s fumble recovery gave the Delta Devils a chance to climb even closer, but an interception put the ball back into Alabama A&M’s hands.

In a bit of NCAA history, Bulldogs assistant Willie Totten, a record-setting quarterback for MVSU (1981-85), returned for the first time as an opposing coach to a stadium named for him (and teammate Jerry Rice).
