Old Dominion beats Rice 45-42 as time expires

HOUSTON (AP) — Ricky Segers kicked the game-winning field goal with no time left on the clock to give Old Dominion its first Conference USA victory, 45-42 over Rice on Saturday.

The Monarchs led by as many as 21 points, but Rice rallied back and tied the score at 42 with 1:05 left to play. Old Dominion quickly moved down the field as Taylor Heinicke completed a 45-yard pass to Zach Pascal to put Old Dominion at the Rice 15. Gerard Johnson’s 8-yard run set up the 25-yard field goal for Segers.

Heinicke threw for five touchdowns and ran for one more, finishing with 430 yards for the Monarchs (3-1, 1-0).

Darik Dillard led the Owls (0-3, 0-1) with three touchdowns, rushing for a total of 70 yards. Dillard capped Rice’s 15-play, 80-yard final possession with a 7-yard TD run to tie the score.
