Charlotte tops Campbell 33-9

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Kalif Phillips ran for three touchdowns to lead Charlotte to a 33-9 victory over Campbell on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

Phillips scored on a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter and followed it up with 1- and 10-yard TD runs to help Charlotte push its lead to 27-3. He had 70 yards on 13 carries.

Blake Brewer made two field goals in the first quarter for the 49ers and Maetron Thomas took it in from the 40 early in the fourth to make it 33-9.

Matt Johnson ended the day throwing 14 of 30 for 189 yards. Thomas led the 49ers with 78 yards on six carries.

Mitchell Brown put the Fighting Camels on the board with a field goal with 3 seconds left in the first half. Ben Bolling caught a 25-yard pass from Dakota Wolf early in the fourth for Campbell’s only touchdown.
