Clemson RB Dye out of spring practice

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson running back Tyshon Dye tore an Achilles tendon during a workout and will miss spring practice.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced Dye's injury Friday. Swinney said he hoped to have the 5-foot-11, 215-pound redshirt freshman back for the regular season.

Dye was expected to compete with returnees Zac Brooks, D.J. Howard and C.J. Davidson to replace 1,000-yard rusher Rod McDowell in the backfield

Dye, of Elberton, Ga., was one of Clemson's top recruits before last season and was expected to receive playing time. But he injured his back during August camp and when his rehab was slower than expected, Dye underwent surgery in October.

He also had surgery on his ankle to fix a previous problem.

The Tigers start spring drills on March 5.
