Bake Bethesda A Pie Contest Registration Opens

Pies in the 2011 Central Farm Markets today announced plans for its annual pie contest, giving contestants plenty of time to devise an award-winning baked treat.

The 4th Annual Bake Bethesda A Pie Contest will take place on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Sunday Bethesda market at Bethesda Elementary School (7600 Arlington Blvd.). The contest will again include two categories: sweet and savory.

More than 200 spectators watched 45 participants show off their pie creations during last year’s event. A D.C. woman won both categories with a tropical fresh coconut pie and a tomato onion goat cheese pie.

Each pie will be judged on overall appearance, crust color, flavor, texture and doneness, filling consistency, flavor and originality. Pre-made crusts aren’t allowed.

The contest is open to amateur bakers and there is a kids division. The Market is requiring a $5 donation per pie entry that will go to the Manna Food Center.

This year’s judges are Aviva Goldfarb, the founder of a dinner planning service, David Hagedorn, who had a 25-year career as a chef and restaurateur before becoming a food writer, and pastry chef Ed Lichorat.

After the judging, spectators can try the pies.

Registration for the contest will start on Wednesday. For more info, visit the Central Farm Markets website.
