Anne Arundel police chief steps down

WASHINGTON — Quoting Frank Zappa, Anne Arundel County Police Chief Kevin
Davis says he will resign, effective Dec. 1.

In a news release about his
resignation, Davis starts off with the singer’s
line, “Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.”

Davis’ resignation comes after Steve Schuh won the election for Anne Arundel
County Executive.

“I am stepping down as police chief effective December 1 with great pride in
the
progress of our agency,” Davis says, in the release.

“The incoming administration has informed me they are heading in a different
direction, and I respect the County Executive Elect’s decision to form his own
leadership team. As a resident of this county, I wish the new administration
and
police chief nothing but the best in the years to come. They have my full
support for a seamless transition.”

Davis has been at the helm of the department for 1 1/2 years.

The police force has an authorized strength of 710, which Davis touts as an
“all-time” high.

He says the department has achieved a 95 percent homicide closure rate,
reduced fatal accidents and “realized dramatic strides in community policing.”

Davis says the police force is becoming more diverse. He says the current
academy class includes 20 percent African Americans, 10 percent Latinos and 25
percent women.

“The long overdue diversity needle is finally moving in a progressive
direction, and will go a long way toward eventually reflecting the diversity
of our community,” Davis says.
