Annapolis city manager leaving post

Thursday - 1/9/2014, 3:34pm  ET

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The city manager is leaving his post in Annapolis.

Mayor Michael Pantelides, who was sworn in last month, announced Wednesday that Michael Mallinoff is stepping down.

It's the second high-profile departure this week. Planning Director Jon Arason's exit was announced Monday.

Mallinoff started with the city in 2002 as the director of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs and became city manager in 2010.

Assistant City Manager Virginia Burke will serve as acting city manager during a search for a replacement.

Some city leaders voiced concerns about the move. Alderwoman Sheila Finlayson tells The Capital that the termination was done "unprofessionally and disrespectfully" and she wishes Mallinoff could have been kept on to smooth the transition to his replacement. Alderman Fred Paone says he thinks the timing is not good.
