Va. Marine runs across the Chesapeake Bay on a boat

WASHINGTON – Marine Brendan O’Toole is not letting anything get in the way of completing his goal of running across the country for veterans’ services.

When he was told he couldn’t run across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge out of safety, O’Toole found another way — he’s running on water. Jack Taylor of Jack Taylor’s Alexandria Toyota, a sponsor of Run for Veterans, offered to put a treadmill on the back of his boat and drive O’Toole across the bay while he ran.

This photo, shared on the USO’s Facebook page, is the result of that idea.

“The Run For Veterans president – who started running from Oceanside, CA last Veterans Day – is on track to complete his coast-to-coast run in Portland, Maine, next month,” the USO caption reads.

O’Toole started The Run for Veterans with friends with the idea of improving veterans experience acclaimating back to civilian life and finding the resources and services they need. He reached the of the U.S. Capitol last Thursday.

In the 21 states he’s run so far, supporters have found him via team updates on Facebook. Some have even joined his run for a stretch.

O’Toole says he’ll likely take a break after he reaches the finish line on Nov. 11, completing his goal of running the country in a year.
