WASHINGTON – A man is in custody in connection with Sunday morning’s armed robbery at the Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover.
A 71-year-old woman was entering an elevator at the casino when she says a man with a knife tried to take her purse, failed and then ran away. Later a 35-year-old woman was robbed of cash in the parking garage.
Anne Arundel County police arrested Paul J. Morin, 32, of Bowie, Md., Monday on charges of armed robbery, robbery, second degree assault and other related charges.
Police say they were able to identify Morin with the help of vigilant witnesses, security staff and casino surveillance cameras.
“We were able to get key information off of surveillance footage, a vehicle leaving the area, and also that coupled with some witnesses that were able to provide us with some really good information,” says Justin Mulcahy, spokesman for Anne Arundel County police.
A spokeswoman for the casino, Carmen Gonzales, says what happened Sunday was “an extremely isolated incident.”
She says there have been no other robberies at the casino, which opened in June 2012.
Gonzales says “just about every inch” of the casino property is covered by surveillance cameras, which help identify and swiftly apprehend any criminal suspects.
