CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a grant of more than $1 million to buy and demolish flood-prone properties in Chesapeake.
The federal agency says the hazard mitigation grant will help pay to demolish six residential structures that have been repetitively flooded.
Officials say the grant will help flood victims "start anew in a community outside the floodplain." The grant will pay for 75 percent of the total cost of the project.
The grant program helps states and local governments reduce loss of life and property due to natural disasters.
