At $10, the 2009 Alamos Malbec from the Catena Family of wines in Mendoza, Argentina offers a splendid value. It has scents of violets, dark plums and cocoa with flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and ripe plum, with a touch of pepper and notes of vanilla. If you want a crowd pleasing white wine that won't break the bank, try the 2009 Villa Antinori Toscana Bianco from the Tuscany region of Italy ($10). This white wine has an intense aroma of white rose petals and apple with flavors of peach, nectarine and apple. Other wines to try: The 2006 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County, California (around $20) and the 2007 Chateau Pipeau from the Saint-Emilion region of France ($25).
