Covered bridge in Thurmont closed for repairs

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — A covered bridge in Thurmont has been closed for repairs.

Officials in Frederick County said Tuesday that the Loy’s Station Covered Bridge located south of Route 77 on Old Frederick Road has been damaged and is closed.

Frederick County spokeswoman Robin Santangelo said in an e-mail that a large beam is hanging down and officials are assessing the damage. Bill Routzahn, superintendent of Highway Operations in Frederick County, says it appears a vehicle hit a brace and pulled it down. Officials are looking for the vehicle that was involved.

The bridge over Owens Creek was first constructed around 1880. It has been modified and rebuilt but still contains original wood. It is one of half a dozen covered bridges in Maryland.
