Frederick schools get grant for summer program

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick County public schools have received a federal grant to start a summer learning program for students at Monocacy schools.

The Frederick News-Post ( reports the school system is getting nearly $900,000 over three years through 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Program to start the program. Doreen Bass, the school system's grants coordinator, says the program will allow 120 Monocacy elementary and middle students to spend eight weeks studying math and language arts.

Keith Harris, elementary instructional director for the schools, says students will be selected for the program based on their academic needs.

The grant will be presented to the Frederick County Board of Education for approval on Sept. 12.
