Amazon introduces Sunday delivery with U.S. Postal Service

WASHINGTON – Internet retailer Amazon is partnering with the United States Postal Service to deliver packages seven days a week — just in time for the holiday shipping influx.

Amazon is offering Sunday deliveries through the U.S. Postal Service in select cities, the company announced Tuesday. Right now, Sunday service is available only in the New York and Los Angeles metro areas. Next year, Amazon plans to expand Sunday deliveries to other cities including Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans.

“As online shopping continues to increase, the Postal Service is very happy to offer shippers like Amazon the option of having packages delivered on Sunday,” Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer Patrick R. Donahoe said in a news release. “With this new service, the Postal Service is now delivering packages seven days a week in select cities. Customers can expect the same reliable and valued service that the Postal Service currently provides.”

Sunday Amazon deliveries from the post office are free for purchases of $35 or more and for Amazon Prime members who pay $79 a year for that service.

“We’re excited that now every day is an Amazon delivery day and we know our Prime members, who voraciously shop on Amazon, will love the additional convenience they will experience as part of this new service,” Dave Clark, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide operations and customer service, said in a news release.

Already, both Amazon and Wal-Mart offer same-day deliveries locally every day except for Sunday.

The cost of Amazon’s Local Express Delivery starts at $8.99 for items ordered before 11 a.m.

Wal-Mart To Go is available locally in Northern Virginia and costs $10 extra for orders placed by noon.
